Chateau de Brecy jardins normandie. CREULLY SUR SEULLES GARDENS OF THE CHÂTEAU DE BRÉCY Parks and gardens A sumptuous architectural ensemble. Brécy lies between Caen and Bayeux. How this garden came to be tucked away in this hidden corner was a mystery to La Varende, who was fascinated by its ‘inexplicable magnificence’. The gardens at Brécy date from the second half of the 17th century and were long thought to have been designed by François Mansart. They are one of the very few French gardens of that period remaining. From the parterre at the back of the house, the garden rises in a series of four terraces – each one planted out differently – to the great wrought-iron gates and the sky beyond. Brécy combines a medieval flavour in its separate walled gardens with the Renaissance in its sculptures and knot gardens, while heralding the grand tradition of French classical gardens linked closely to a stately home.
